One condition with kids we see frequently in our office is Otitis media or ear infections.

One 2 year old who was brought in by his grandma was a dramatic case.

He had already been put on 8 courses of antibiotics and had 2 surgeries with tubes inserted into his ears. When I examined him, he had pus coming out of his ears.

When the upper neck is out of alignment, it affects the nerves going to the ears and the Eustachian tube. This can make it difficult for the body to drain fluid from the ear and that can become infected.

Medically they treat the symptoms, either with antibiotics for the infection or tubes to drain the fluid.

The other concern with this little boy was that, due to his ear problems. His speech and motor development were very delayed. He was barely walking or talking; very shy and subdued.

We began his care with cervical (neck) adjustments. He responded quickly with his ears clearing within the week. He also began walking exploring the office and talking more and more.

Chiropractic adjustments for children are very gentle. They barely feel anything other than a gentle massage.

Eventually his ears were clear and no infection returned. After several months, his mother (instead of his grandmother) brought him to the office for his appointment.

When she met me she began to cry thanking me for giving her son back. Of course now he was an ornery and active 2 year old. She added “I think I am grateful!

We’ve also blogged about another similar case that happened many years ago.

One of our patients told us about her 3 year old son’s chronic ear infections going away after bringing him in to be treated by a chiropractor.

She had never heard of chiropractic care before then, but she and her entire family became lifelong patients of chiropractors after her son. You can read her story here.
