As we are approaching our 30 year anniversary here at WOW, I want to share with you where it really all began.

In high school, I worked at a camp for inner city kids. They all had so much potential but had so many roadblocks in their way.

That’s the summer I made the commitment to my life’s work: To help people reach their full potential.

This commitment first led me to social work. Many of you know my first career was spent at Franklin County Children’s Services working in the child abuse unit.

While there, I fell down an entire flight of stairs and had severe sciatica.

I went to my family MD and he wanted me to take Valium (remember Valium?) Several of my clients at the time were addicted to it and so I avoided it. Eight months went on with visits to 3 other medical doctors with a variety of useless medications. At the same time my menstrual period had completely stopped but each MD said it could not be related to the fall.

Finally a girl at work suggested chiropractic. I was scared but desperate so I went.

The chiropractor’s  second question in the consultation was: “Are you having problems with your periods?

Surprised at the question, he explained that the same irritated nerve that was causing the pain was the same nerve connecting the brain to the reproductive organs.

But his last question about my migraines actually made me mad. “You can’t help my migraines- I have had them since I have been 12 years old and the head of Ears, Nose and Throat at University hospital has said no one can help me.  I just need to stay on all the drugs: anti-histamines, decongestants, pain meds and anti-biotics,” I responded. He laughed and said “We’ll see”.

Within two weeks the sciatica was gone; within 4 weeks my menstrual cycle was back to normal and within 6 weeks my migraines were finished.

I was grateful for the sciatica and my menstrual cycle returning to normal, but the end of the migraines was my true miracle. They were so severe that I had contemplated suicide several times.

One morning soon after, I woke up, looked at my husband and declared that I had to be a chiropractor.

I set my intent to help others reach their full potential and chiropractic was clearly the path.

That was over 30 years ago. (I was only 9 at the time!)
